Cooper came home with me, having captured my heart in a moment. Four puppies raced out of their cardboard box and I knew immediately. I remembered How It Begins, a Mary Oliver poem, as I said, "I want that one."

Sophie's ready for morning prayer If you know the FB page for Sophie Elliott, you'll know that she died December 27, 2019. I took her for that last ride with my friend, David, and then to Camp Friendship for burial next to Freddie. Here, she's ready for daily morning prayer on the prayer desk cushion at St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church.
Freddie was a black Pomeranian we adopted when my friend, Lou, passed away. Sophie and I had known Freddie for years so the decision to adopt was simple. He was with us less than a year but there was love enough for the rest of my days.

Sophie and I had ten years together and, oh, did we fall in love. After the death of my first Schnauzer, Bonnie, I knew from previous experience that I wanted another dog in my life, soon. Not to replace-not possible-but to have sweet dog energy in my life. I looked at hundreds of dog pictures until I saw Sophie. She had my heart at first glance.

Willow was the first dog in my adult life. I was newly single, for the first time ever, and moving to DC-alone. All my friends said, "You gotta get a dog." I got a dog. What a terrific 6-pound gift.
Willow stayed with my neighbors Carmen and Aster (both men) and Aster so fell in love with Willow that he painted this.
